Teen Mom the New Reality

One popular argument that comes up when viewing media or partaking in violent games is the fear that somehow we may be influenced to act in ways that are deemed aberrant in society.  Now the discussion has moved to reality T.V. If like I said earlier, that people are somehow more willing to relate to other  contestants or reality celebrities because they are can be seen as more realistic, then it can be seen as no surprise that a link is often drawn to the number of teens pregnancies and the celebrity status that cast of the hit T.V. series “Teen Mom” have gained.
In a news article covered by ABC’s Juju Chang this link seems to have been verified. The report follows one of the “Teen Mom” former star in how she felt producers of the show instigated situations for more drama. Since being on the show other girls have gotten pregnant in order to be famous.  What does this say about the girls who get pregnant for fame? Is the T.V. show really influencing these girls so much that they feel this is the best way for a better life or is  this a situation where because of socio-economic reasons the girls were at a higher risk anyway?
One aspect of this might be the fact the moms are people they identify with. It would make sense then that a higher percentage of people who watch this show and truly identify with the girls are likely to see the cast’s path as a way for something better. According to an evidence briefing by the NHS’s Health Development Agency, girls from a lower socio-economic class are at higher risk for teen pregnancy. Perhaps then shows like “Teen Mom” aid in optimizing their ability to identify and empathize with the girls on the show.

  1. I like this blog and I appreciate that the author mentioned the girls who got pregnant in order to be famous. This clearly shows the power media have because if you think of it this incident demonstrates that the media have literary a power over a life, in this case the life of the babies conceived with main motivation for their mothers being the hope of fame.

  2. In this article of teens getting pregnant because they want to be famous, people can see that media influence our life too much and has big power. Teens are agreeable to exchange their lives for couple of days of fame.
    Very good article:)

  3. Hi there,
shocked after I read this post and how girls got pregnant just to get to this ridicules show "Teen Moms" I had to comment on your blog, right on this post of yours. It is very interesting how you take it from the socio-economic perspective and critically consider if it is really because of the media or f the teens were at risk anyway. However one can't really consider that most of the girls really identify with being a young mother. It has a much more complex content, for me for example it is not really important that when I have kinds I want to give them safety and the best childhood they can have by providing them with financial security, familiar safety and a good environment not only inside but also outside, in their everyday life as well. This is however hard to achieve with infinite possibilities of the interent and the risk that children can be exposed to dangerous, unethical und inappropriate materia they can easily access. So overall I really like how you point out different views of the happenings around reality TV and the actual reality we live in and how people are greatly influenced by such shows, magazines and other programs. Especially for young women this post is very concerning but also interest evoking.
    Great Job, Tolu!

  4. Hey Tolu, by reading your post and looking at the video, makes me think how society definitely is changing because of reality t.v. in someway, since these programs like teen mom and Jeresey Shore that common people become celebrity status by doing stupid stuff just because they're simply televise, and the worst part of it is that society likes, enjoys and idolize it! We as society should be aware of the behavioral, cognitive and attitudinal effects of media, especially in t.v. because most people can imitate it and end up the same way, just because "it is cool". Especially parents and us as teenagers to look at more educational or at least less stupid t.v.
